If you live in the midwest, you know how absolutely beautiful the snow can be—I especially love evergreen trees covered in snow. If you’re planning on winter engagement photos, you might be questioning what you should wear, because you want to wear something cute but the cold winter can sometimes limit your outfit options—to see all of the outfits I recommend, check out my Pinterest Board here.
Here are three tips to keep in mind while figuring out what to wear for your engagement photo session in winter!
#1 Dress in layers
The biggest tip is to dress in layers! My favorite layering technique it to wear a dress coat over a knit sweater, dress, or your favorite top. Dress coats photograph beautifully, because it provides structure, is neutral colored, and adds a classy element to the photos. But If dress coats aren’t your thing—you can use sweaters, cardigans, or jackets to get the same effect!
#2 Pick warm shoes
One time, I arrived to a winter session and my clients forgot about the snow and wore open toe stilettos!! Even though the shoes were ADORABLE and they rocked their session—I recommend picking out warm shoes for winter sessions. Ankle boots & hiking boots work perfectly!!
#3 Pick neutral colors
The third tip for your session is to choose outfits with neutral or darker toned-colors. Blacks, browns, greys, etc. look STUNNING in the winter. Bright and colorful outfits will clash a little bit, if you’re looking to add some color opt for a dark green, red, burgundy, or dark blue. Try to avoid bright / pastel colors the winter season—but that’s just my opinion/style.
Don’t feel like you have to follow these tips too closely—in the end wear something that is comfortable and feels like YOU. One of the great parts of my job is capturing unique couples, and clothing is a big part of that! I want to celebrate and capture your uniqueness 🙂
